The proposed road from the Indian Ocean to Lake Victoria (above, in red) cuts through the north end of Tanzania’s Serengeti NP. The African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) has proposed a southern route (below, in purple) circumventing the ecosystem in its entirety. Map by the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF).

AWF’s proposed alternative (above, in purple) replaces the proposed 31-mile highway across the northern Serengeti that would be a concrete barrier stopping the annual wildebeest migration to the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Map by the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF).
