February Events:

16: Expedition, Rio Grande NM
(continues to March 3)
February 2, World Wetlands Day:
Today RAMSAR added a million hectares in Gabon, known as “the green heart of Africa,” to its register of wetlands of international significance. Gabon wetlands are threatened by resource development and its associated pollution.
Feb. 16 – Mar. 3, Rio Grande Expedition, New Mexico:
The Rio Grande, while not a NWNL case-study watershed, offers interesting comparative documentation as a North American transboundary river basin facing both higher levels of water extraction and lower levels of snow pack. Extraction issues include agriculture, increasing domestic usage, evaporation, droughts and invasive species. Alison Jones, NWNL Project Director, will talk to local sources while in Albuquerque for the North American Nature Photography Assoc. board meetings and Summit. She will then document New Mexican reaches of the Rio Grande and any Mexican border fence impacts on the watershed. Alison will be joined by Bonnie Muench, NWNL Expedition Photographer, and Jean M. Thatcher, NWNL Researcher.
